河套地区土壤肥沃，灌溉系统发达，适于种植小麦、水稻、谷、大豆、高粱、玉米、甜菜等作物，一向是西北主要的农业区。河套地区被称为“塞外米粮川”。河套地区的畜牧业和水产业也很发达。河套平原，地势平坦，土地肥沃，渠道纵横，农田遍布。有可耕地面积960多万亩，现已开垦500多万亩，盛产小麦、玉米、高粱、大豆、糜麻、葵花、甜菜、酒花、瓜果、大白菜等作物。这里是自治区小麦的主要产区。蜜瓜、大白菜、酒花、葵花、枸杞等。
